So, I've been reading this book called Arsenic and Adobo by Mia P Manansala. It's the first book I can remember reading by a Filipino author about Filipinos but it is driving me crazy! I wanted to read it to support, you know, Filipinos lol, but man, I'm so conflicted.
It's a murder mystery. The characters are doing dumb things like letting the police search and take evidence without a lawyer present and whatever. But they are actually acting EXACTLY how older Filipinos would. And even the main character, the younger 20 something female, is acting correctly because she expresses that they shouldn't be doing this but when the elder says, stop being so fussy, she has to do what they say because they are the elder, you know? So, the author actually is writing them correctly but they are so frustrating LOL!
I wish I knew someone non-Filipino who has read it because I'd be interested in hearing their opinions. Also there are a lot of tagalog words thrown in and I'm wondering if that bothers people who don't know tagalog. I feel like even when they aren't explained, you can get them by context but I don't know for sure because I actually know what they mean, lol.
It's actually the start of a series. I'm hoping that I will stop being frustrated by the end, lol, so I can continue it but not sure if I can.
